Wheel Throwing for Kids!
£25.00

School's out and we are pleased to be hosting some school holiday wheel throwing classes for kids and teens this summer!

Sessions are 1.5 hours long and each child gets 3 x balls of clay to use. It's important to know that things don't always go to plan on the pottery wheel and it might take couple of goes to get the hang of things. That's why we give you 3 tries!

After getting messy on the wheels, each child needs to choose their 1 favourite piece to keep. There's a little time to decorate with colour and texture, and then you need to leave the items with us at the studio to complete the glazing and firing process. It takes 3-4 weeks before the pieces are ready so you'll need to come back and pick up your creations in September.

Age & ability

We recommend wheel classes for ages 8+ and all children need to have a supervising adult present for the session, but please feel free to sit back and encourage with a tea or a coffee.

Children younger than 8 do find the process more difficult due to the strength and coordination needed to control both the clay and the wheel pedal. However, we do understand that every child is different and sometimes younger siblings want to join in too! While we recommend wheel classes for ages 8+, we're happy for parents or guardians to make an informed decision about whether their younger child is likely to enjoy and manage the experience. Smaller children may need more help from an adult if they are struggling to reach or operate the wheel pedal.

If you don't live in Manchester we can post finished pieces out to you for an additional £5. Extra pieces can also be kept for £3 per pot, both payable on the day of the workshop.

Frequently asked questions

What shall I bring?

It's best to wear clothes you don't mind getting messy, tie long hair back and have short nails. We'll provide aprons and all tools and equipment. We also have a spacious bathroom if you'd prefer to get changed before or after.

What can we make?

Wheel throwing is harder than it looks. We'll show you how to make small items like bowls, mini vases or cups. In your first ever wheel session we don't recommend coming with set ideas as to what you'd like to make, just be prepared to go with the flow, be challenged, get your hands dirty and have some fun!

Do we get to glaze our pieces?

No. In one-off sessions all the finishing and glazing of your work is done by our team. This is because these steps need to be completed a couple of weeks after making. In most cases you'll be able to choose your glaze colour before you leave the studio. If you'd like to learn all steps of the process, please take a look at our courses.

Can we take home items on the day?

No. You'll need to leave them with us to glaze and fire, which takes 3-4 weeks. We'll let you know when they are ready to pick up, or we can post items out to you for £5.

Is it suitable for teens?

This class is great for ages 14+, it makes a great activity for a teen and an adult to try together. Younger children are better suited to our child specific classes which run in the school holidays.

What's the cancellation policy?

We require 14 days notice to refund or reschedule your booking.

Where less than 14 -3 days notice is provided, we will provide you with a refund if we are able to re-sell your spot. Where less than 3 days is given, we do not provide refunds.

Is there parking?

Onsite parking is also available but it is charged at £6, cash only. You can find cheaper and and free parking on Higher Ardwick at weekends, at Powerleague and on Union Street and Temperance Street. Please allow time to find parking so we can start the workshop promptly.
